Dental Care While Wearing Braces

Image of a person with braces.Oral hygiene is paramount, especially when you have braces installed. The braces are meant to straighten your teeth, making them more symmetrical and giving you an attractive smile. Our specialists recommend a small toothbrush with soft bristles and a flat surface for brushing your teeth and braces. This toothbrush is usually small enough to reach all parts of your braces.

Brushing Teeth With Braces

We recommend that you brush your teeth five times a day for a minimum of five minutes when you have braces. You can brush in the morning, before you go to bed, and after each meal to achieve this.

When brushing, you should start by touching the top of your band and brackets at an angle that aims at your tooth. The next step would be to brush back and forth under the bracket. It would be best if you then brushed the inside of your teeth, and the biting surfaced. Remember to brush your tongue too thoroughly. Lastly, brush your gums in circular motions.

Flossing Teeth With Braces

Our dentists recommend that you have a regular dental floss and a floss threader. The floss threader will be very helpful in threading the floss between your teeth and under the bands of your braces.

The first step when flossing will be to thread the floss beneath the bands of your braces using the floss threader. You should then remove the threader and proceed to floss each side of the tooth carefully and thoroughly in that section. When you're done flossing one part, you should pull the floss and repeat the procedure on all areas of your teeth.

You should avoid eating corn on the cob, taffy, chewing gum, and popcorn when you have braces installed to prevent them from breaking. Please pay us a visit for more tips on maintaining good oral hygiene while wearing braces. Our doors are always open.
