Crowns are arguably the most common prosthetic implants in dentistry. They are mainly used to reinforce severely damaged teeth or cap teeth after a root canal or scaling procedure. The procedure of making custom-made crowns and inserting them has improved over the decades. Ordinarily, impressions of your teeth have to be taken to a dental lab so that crowns are made for you.

Crowns are attached to damaged teeth to strengthen them and improve your cosmetic appearance. Some people also opt to get crowns when they have discolored teeth. Crowns can also be necessary to help facilitate other procedures such as dental bridges.

Crowns are classified according to the material used to make them. They can be made of ceramic or porcelain as well as gold and base metal alloys. Ceramic crowns are mainly used while repairing incisors and canines. Ceramic easily blends well with the natural color of the other teeth. Ceramic crowns are also quite inexpensive, making them one of the most popular options among our clients.

Gold alloy crowns are normally shiny and bright. They can be used on the front or back teeth. They are mainly preferred for their cosmetic appearance. Gold is an expensive material, and so are the crowns made from it. Porcelain crowns are usually infused with other metals to make them strong. It is also a relatively expensive material. Porcelain is also quite attractive, and it blends well with the color of natural teeth as well. Many of our clients opt for porcelain crowns if they can afford them.

Crown Placement Procedure

The crown placement procedure is quite simple. The tooth over which the crown is to be placed needs to be prepared first. If the tooth is affected by decay, the decay has to be first removed and the tooth disinfected. Chipped or fractured teeth need to be filed and polished into shape first before the crown can be placed. If you are getting implants, anchor posts have to be planted in your jaw bone, then an abutment attached in readiness for the crown.

Our dentist will take an impression of the tooth, and it will be sent to the dental lab for the crown to be made. You may have to wait for the crown for a couple of days. Crowns are permanently cemented into place. A special type of cement is used to attach the crown to the abutment. The crown can only be removed by a professional at the clinic. They function just like ordinary teeth, and you will not have to change your diet after you get them. Crowns should last between 10 and 15 years, although you need to take good care of them to ensure they last longer.
