What is a Porcelain Fixed Bridge?

We can use a dental bridge to restore missing teeth. A bridge consists of two dental crowns on either end to serve as anchors. These anchors are designed to fit over any combination of healthy teeth or dental implants. Between the anchors are pontic, or prosthetic teeth. The anchors and prosthetic teeth between are fused together as one piece, literally creating a bridge to fill in the spot of missing teeth. A dental bridge can be used to replace a single tooth, or multiple teeth, as long as we have the correct support, it can be used to replace even more than four teeth.

Why Should I Replace Missing Teeth?

A common question from patients is why they should spend the time and money to replace missing teeth, especially if they are just missing one. A single missing tooth may not seem like a big deal, but it can be. When a patient loses a tooth there are some immediate consequences and some long term ones. Immediately, the patient is going to start chewing a majority of their food on the other side, meaning the balance of wear on their teeth is going to be off. Another immediate effect is going to occur in the bone. Our teeth create a connection to our bone and the pressure applied to our teeth transfers to the bone keeping it healthy. When we lose that connection, the bone no continues to send cells to that spot and the bone will begin to atrophy. The effects of this may not be noticeable with one tooth missing, but lose two or three and you begin to see changes in your facial shape.

Long term problems of a missing tooth include allowing space for neighboring teeth to shift out of alignment. These changes can change your bite and even cause joint issues in your jaw known as TMJ dysfunction.

It is best for your oral health to replace missing teeth, even if it’s just one.

Implant Supported Bridge

The traditional bridge relies on anchors to keep it in place. For some patients, healthy teeth can be used as anchors, when healthy teeth are unavailable we can surgically insert posts, known as implants to provide the necessary support. The benefit of using a dental implant is it means we can leave your healthy teeth alone, and we always advocate for your remaining natural healthy teeth.

An implant-supported bridge is anchored with the use of dental implants. Either titanium or non-metal ceramic implants are surgically inserted directly into your jaw, once the bone has healed around the implant, we can then place a dental prosthetic over them, including a dental crown, denture or in this case a bridge.

Bridge Variations

Besides the traditional bridge, the dental bridge does come with some variations. The Cantilever Bridge has one anchor, instead of two. This type of bridge is more suitable for front teeth where less pressure is applied in chewing. The Maryland Bridge doesn’t use crowns to anchor, but instead has metal wings that are secured to neighboring teeth on the backside of the teeth. The Maryland Bridge is often a temporary bridge before further treatment is used.
