What is Bruxism? Causes and SymptomsIf you often wake up with an aching jaw and a headache, you may have bruxism. Bruxism is a condition that involves involuntary clenching of the teeth while the person is sleeping. Bruxism can cause several complications if it is left untreated.

At Grove Street Family Dentistry, Tania Tran, DMD and can prevent bruxism from becoming a serious health issue.

Symptoms of Bruxism

If you suspect you have bruxism, it is important to tell us about your condition so that we can check the health of your teeth. Some common symptoms of bruxism are:
•  Face and jaw pain
•  Locked jaw
•  Tooth sensitivity
•  Eroded tooth enamel
•  Cracked or fractured teeth
•  Cracked tooth restorations
•  Bites on the inner cheeks
•  Pain near the ears
•  Tooth sensitivity and pain
•  Worn tooth enamel
•  Stiffness in the jaw
•  Teeth misalignment
•  Sleep disruption

Causes of Bruxism

No exact cause of bruxism has been determined; however, the condition is often linked to stress, dental disorders like misaligned bite or missing teeth, or sleep disorders.
Some psychiatric medication can also cause teeth grinding in patient. In addition, bruxism may also manifest in people with neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases.

Treatment for Bruxism

In many cases, bruxism goes away on its own when triggers like stress are removed. In other cases, it typically requires mild to moderate interventions. However, if your bruxism is severe, we can safeguard the health of your mouth with custom-fitted mouthguards.
If your bruxism is due to misaligned or missing teeth, we can recommend orthodontic treatment or dental restorations like dental implants and dental bridges.
If your bruxism is triggered by stress and anxiety, we can help you determine ways to relax through exercise, physical therapy and meditation.

With timely treatment, you can help eliminate or alleviate bruxism and the side effects resulting from it, ensuring a better quality of life. If you think you have bruxism, schedule an appointment with us at (360) 659-3200 today.
