Does Dieting Hurt Your Teeth?

Posted on 9/7/2020 by Office
Does Dieting Hurt Your Teeth?People strive to have the perfect body, or a thinner physique. However, some diets, such as crash or fad diets, can affect your nutritional well-being and overall health. When men or women become obsessed with dieting, they can hurt their tooth enamel, which can lead to dental decay and gum recession and disease. The following information details how some types of dieting can damage the smile.

How Chronic Dieting Can Affect Dental Health

If your diet is not nutritionally balanced, it can also impact your teeth and gums. Women, especially, who go to diet extremes often have more problems with enamel erosion and gum disease. For example, chronic dieting can lead to vitamin deficiencies, especially deficiencies in calcium and B12. Both of these vitamins are needed to prevent gingivitis as well as keep the teeth and jaws strong and healthy. Also, men or women who always are on some type of fad diet may eat higher protein foods and skip the carbs. When they follow this type of routine, they also increase the level of acid in the saliva. In turn, they can develop halitosis and more cavities.

What You Can Do to Improve Your Diet and Dental Health

By following a diet that includes a balance of proteins, carbs, healthy fats, grains, and dairy, you can ensure the health of your gums and teeth. For example, if your diet is void of Omega 3s, you may suffer from stress more frequently. In some cases, this may cause you to grind your teeth or experience temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).

Leaving out nutrients and not following a balanced plan of nutrition can cause dental health woes. That is why we encourage our patients to eat healthy foods and exercise in moderation.
