Foods to Avoid if You Have an Open Sore in Your Mouth
Sometimes the wearing of dentures, orthodontics, or an injury to the mouth can produce an open sore. If this happens to you, you need to call our office immediately. Not only should you have the sore examined and treated professionally, you also need to find out what foods or beverages are safe to eat. After all, you don't want to burn your mouth or scratch the gums by eating the wrong foods.

What Foods are Taboo when You Have an Open Mouth Sore

When you have an open sore in your mouth, you will find that certain beverages and foods will make the sore worse. That means you need to refrain from having foods that do not neutralize mouth acids or which are considered highly acidic. For example, citrus fruits are not good to eat when you have an open sore, nor are spicy foods, which can cause you a good deal of discomfort. Never drink carbonated drinks or drinks with caffeine, as they only aggravate the problem. Alcohol should also not be consumed if your mouth contains a sore.

What Foods You Can Eat?

When you have an open mouth sore, make sure you soak some food to make it more palatable and easier to eat. For example, eating cereal and milk is a good idea, as is eating pasta and a sauce. A toast soaked in egg yolk helps too. When food is soaked, it causes less mouth irritation. You can also eat bland or creamy foods, such as cheese, milkshakes, ice cream, yogurt, or cream-based soups. If you cannot eat many foods because of the pain, consume higher calorie foods for energy. Also, it helps to chop foods, such as poultry or fish into small, bite-sized pieces. You might even add them to a blender.
We can offer you tips when we are caring for a sore in your mouth. If you have this dental problem or any other dental issue, contact our office today. We will do everything we can to make you feel more comfortable.
