If you are an adult, you have heard for years about maintaining good dental health, but you may wonder what the point is of keeping your teeth and gums healthy. There are many reasons you need to brush, floss your teeth, and visit your dentist twice yearly. Here are some reasons why keeping your teeth and gums healthy is so important.
Bad Oral Health Can Cause Lifelong Irritation or Infection
When your teeth and gums are not healthy, you are far more likely to have massive amounts of tooth decay as well as gum disease. Tooth decay and periodontal disease cause inflammation of gum tissue. For example, if you have a cavity, the bacteria that cause cavities can lead to an infection in your gums as well. Also, if you have moderate or advanced gum disease, you have acquired a gum infection that you can treat but not cure. Your gum disease can spread infection to the surrounding bone tissue.
Bad Oral Health Can Complicate Chronic Illnesses
If you have a chronic illness, such as heart disease or diabetes, it is even more important to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Heart patients need to avoid infection and inflammation as much as possible because they can lead to additional inflammation in their heart muscle, especially their heart valves, which control the flow of blood into and out of their heart. People with diabetes cannot regulate their blood sugar without insulin or other medication. Periodontal disease and chronic tooth decay can make it challenging to keep your blood sugar low, which can lead to issues with your kidneys, blood flow, and even your eyes. There are also research studies that indicate gum inflammation may make dementia worse.
