Should I Get Dental Insurance?

What Is Dental Insurance?

In general, the reason you pay for insurance is to guard against worst-case situations when they occur, such as automobile insurance covering you and your car in case of an accident. Dental insurance works much like health insurance. For a set price, called a premium, you will receive coverage for specific dental care issues. Dental insurance is far less expensive than other insurance types like health insurance or life insurance.

Dental Insurance Usually Covers the Cost of Preventative Care

One of the best reasons to get dental insurance is because nearly all types of dental insurance cover preventative dental care. This means your dental insurance will cover dental cleanings, checkups, and X-rays for you and your family. Usually, you will not have to pay anything for preventative care, depending on the type of dental insurance you have.

Dental Insurance Covers a Percentage of Other Dental Care

Of course, you do not just visit our dentist for preventative dental care. Many people need to visit our dentist to have cavities filled, crowns put on, or even restorative dentistry such as dental implants and bridgework. Dental care also covers dental emergencies, such as when your child knocks out a tooth while climbing a tree. Usually, dental insurance does not cover 100 percent of this type of dental care. Instead, your policy will most likely cover a percentage of the care. The payout by the insurance company can range from 50 to 75 percent of the cost of these services.
